Alison Winn, Owner and Artist of Studio 513Alison grew up in Iowa. Throughout her childhood her cousins Spencer and Peg, introduced her to the world of art and the feeling of satisfaction that comes with finishing something handmade. After high school, through Spencer, she was given the rare opportunity to attend the Alaska Summer Fine Arts Camp. At the University, Alison was able to explore several different art mediums while taking in the beauty of "the last frontier."

Upon her return from Alaska, she attended Kirkwood Community College, then went on to earn her degree in Interior Design at Iowa State University. After several years of working in the interior design field, a job opportunity for her husband took them to a small midwest town. Alison took that opportunity — decided to switch gears and use her creativity with children. In the spring of 1996 she opened an in-home daycare, which she operates today.

After the children have left for the day, and hers have gone to sleep, Alison sits down at the drawing table and enjoys letting her creativity come to life through her drawings. Many of the ideas come to her while she is out hiking on the trail with their family dog. Other designs come at personal request of someone looking for something a little different or a unique gift for a friend. Alison has always enjoyed art and the creative process. She has found that a little soft music, some paper and ink, and the calm at the end of the day can rejuvenate a soul.

Alison´s work has appeared in Sew News, CNA, Vogue Pattern Magazine and Sewing Today. As well as Print Your Own Fabric by Linda Griepentrog and Missy Shepler, Krause Publications, 2007.
